Welcome Wendy Stanley

Gladney is happy to welcome Wendy Stanley to the New York office. Wendy is our new Social Services Manager. She has always had a passion to work in the adoption field and has over seven years of experience working in international adoption. She has studied, lived and worked abroad in Europe and Asia.

Wendy will be working in collaboration with everyone in the office to help make the adoption process as easy and smooth as possible for our families. Gina will continue to be the main caseworker in the office but Wendy will also carry a caseload in addition to her management responsibilities.

A Note from Wendy

I am very excited to join the New York office of Gladney. I will be acting as the social services manager for the New York Office and in this capacity will oversee the adoption casework and home study services we provide to families adopting through the China program. It is my privilege to be working under Gongzhan Wu’s leadership as the founder and manager of Gladney’s China program.

In the future I will be sharing in many of your personal experiences becoming a family (or adding to your family!), so I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you a little about my personal experience that drew me to work in international adoption.

In 1997, I was working in Washington DC with a colleague who was adopting a baby girl from China. Over several months of application, approval, and waiting, she shared with me the process, her excitement and her worries. One day the wait was over and her referral arrived in the mail! She made her adoption trip and came home with a little girl who has changed, balanced, and fulfilled her life. Her daughter has been thriving in her loving home for ten years.

Sharing this experience with my colleague led me to a period of reflection and ultimately to enroll in graduate school to earn a Masters degree in Social Work. Upon graduation I was fortunate to begin immediately working in the field of international adoption. I have now been working with adoptive families for over seven years and have had the wonderful experience of helping many families bring home their children from China as well as other parts of the world. I have made several trips to different parts of China for both pleasure as well as adoption-related work. Having the opportunity to work in adoption has transformed my life and I hope that I can always be a source of support and information for any person working with the New York office of Gladney.

I look forward to a long future working with Gladney staff and the many families that choose Gladney for assistance with their adoptions.

Warm regards,
Wendy Stanley

Thanks to one of our Gladney parents for securing a $5,000 donation from Merrill Lynch to benefit the China Bright Futures Camp that will be taking place this October in China.

The Bright Futures Camp is a wonderful opportunity for older children in China. It is also a wonderful opportunity for adoptive parents who are interested in adopting older children to travel to China and spend some time participating in the camp program.

Update: Earthquake Relief Efforts

Merrill Lynch is also at the center of earthquake relief efforts, as CEO John Thain was one of seven chief executives of major U.S. companies who participated in a meeting on June 6 at the American Red Cross headquarters in Washington, D.C., to discuss China earthquake relief and reconstruction efforts. "You have to coordinate to get the right results," said Thain.

Thain was the only financial services firm CEO at the meeting and was seated next to China’s U.S. ambassador, Zhou Wenzhong. President George Bush, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson also attended. Firms represented included Avon, Caterpillar, Chevron, Cisco, Home Depot, Honeywell, Johnson & Johnson, Merck, New York Life and Procter & Gamble. Also attending were the heads of the Business Roundtable, U.S. Chamber of Commerce and U.S.-China Business Council.

"The most important message is: the people of America care about the people of China," Mr. Thain told the meeting. "They feel for them, but they also have great hope for their recovery."

He added that good coordination of relief efforts would be the key to the desired results. "The discussion here used the example of blankets being sent to environments that are very warm, and so you are providing help that doesn't really serve the needs of the people. So here, we really want to make sure that the help we provide is what is needed,” he said.

Merrill Lynch has pledged $1 million to rebuild schools in areas affected by the earthquake last month in southwestern China. The American Red Cross estimates that more than 15 million people have been displaced and more than 5 million have been left homeless by the earthquake and its aftershocks.

Mr. Thain visited the Chinese Consulate in New York City on May 21 to sign a condolence book on behalf of Merrill Lynch employees worldwide, expressing sympathy for victims of the earthquake in China.

Hepatitis B Conference

One of our Gladney parents will be attending the 8th annual B Informed Patient Conference, which will be held June 27-28 at St. Vincent Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Hepatitis B is a prevalent issue for parents who are interested in adopting special needs children from China. If you live in the Los Angeles area and are interested in going to the conference, or if you would simply like more information about Hepatitis B, this link will take you to the conference website.
